The Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is known for its beautiful, varied landscapes and offers a gradual ascent that helps with acclimatization. This route starts on the western side of Kilimanjaro, traverses scenic rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts, and has a higher summit success rate due to its gradual climb. The 7-day trek covers around 70 kilometers, allowing climbers to take in panoramic views while reaching Uhuru Peak.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2,100m) to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m)

    Duration 3-4 hours, Distance 7 km, Elevation Gain 650 meters, Starting at Londorossi Gate, you’ll take a short drive to the trailhead. The trek begins in the rainforest, where you may spot monkeys and enjoy the lush vegetation. The path is easy, with gradual ascents leading to Mti Mkubwa Camp, where you’ll rest for the night. This day serves as an introduction to the trek and begins the process of acclimatization.

  • Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m) to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)

    Duration: 5-6 hours Distance: 8 km Elevation Gain: 750 meters The trail ascends through the rainforest and transitions into moorland as you approach the Shira Plateau. The trek offers stunning views of Kibo Peak as you reach Shira 1 Camp, nestled at 3,500 meters. The landscape is diverse, with towering trees and occasional sightings of wildlife, including birds and monkeys.

  • Day 3: Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)

    Duration 3-4 hours, Distance 7 km, Elevation Gain 340 meters. This day is designed for acclimatization, offering a relatively easy hike across the Shira Plateau. The landscape here is dominated by alpine plants and expansive views of the mountain. You’ll make your way to Shira 2 Camp, where you’ll have the opportunity to relax and adjust to the higher altitude, preparing for more challenging days ahead

  • Day 4: Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m) via Lava Tower (4,600m)

    Duration 7-8 hours, Distance 10 km, Elevation Gain 760 meters. This is a challenging day, as the route ascends to Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,950m). The climb to Lava Tower helps with acclimatization, despite the altitude’s impact. After reaching Lava Tower, the route descends to Barranco, offering views of the Barranco Wall, a prominent feature of the mountain’s southern face.

  • Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

    Duration: 4-5 hours Distance: 6 km Elevation Gain: 85 meters Today’s trek is a short but strenuous climb up the Barranco Wall, followed by a more gradual ascent to Karanga Camp. The hike offers excellent views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. Karanga Camp is a vital acclimatization point, providing an opportunity to rest and adjust to the altitude.

  • Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

    Duration: 3-4 hours Distance: 4 km Elevation Gain: 600 meters The trek to Barafu Camp is shorter but steeper. As you approach Barafu, the terrain becomes more barren and rocky, with views of the summit and the vast alpine desert. Barafu Camp is the final base camp before the summit attempt, and climbers typically rest early to prepare for the summit push.

  • Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

    Duration: 12-16 hours Distance: 19 km Elevation Gain: 1,255 meters (to summit) Elevation Loss: 2,795 meters (descent) The summit day begins in the early hours, around midnight, as climbers ascend to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro. After reaching the summit, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp for the night. The descent is long and physically demanding, but it offers stunning views of the mountain from different perspectives. Celebrations await at Mweka Camp, marking the successful completion of the trek.
