The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and highly recommended routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the western side of the mountain, it provides a beautiful and diverse trekking experience through lush rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts. The 8-day trek offers ample time for acclimatization, increasing the chances of a successful summit. Unlike other routes, the Lemosho Route allows trekkers to enjoy breathtaking views, including views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and the expansive Shira Plateau. The route is considered a more gradual climb compared to others, which minimizes the risk of altitude sickness. The longer duration, combined with stunning landscapes and a sense of serenity, makes the Lemosho Route ideal for climbers looking for both a challenging adventure and an immersive experience on Kilimanjaro. Its moderate traffic also means trekkers enjoy a quieter, more private journey on the mountain.
The trek begins at Lemosho Gate, where climbers embark on a 6-hour hike through the lush rainforest. The 6-kilometer trail gains 650 meters in elevation, bringing trekkers to Mti Mkubwa Camp at 2,750 meters. The dense forest provides an excellent opportunity to spot wildlife, including monkeys and various bird species.
Day 2 involves a steady ascent of 750 meters as climbers travel through more rainforest, transitioning into the moorland zone. The trek takes about 6-7 hours and covers 8 kilometers, bringing trekkers to Shira 1 Camp at 3,500 meters. The camp offers sweeping views of the surrounding plateau.
The third day is a moderate 4-5 hour hike covering 6 kilometers. The trail ascends 400 meters to Shira 2 Camp at 3,900 meters, providing stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s upper reaches. The camp lies on the Shira Plateau, offering a beautiful landscape with the summit visible in the distance.
On Day 4, trekkers climb 700 meters to Lava Tower, reaching an altitude of 4,600 meters over the course of 7-8 hours and 9 kilometers. The trail continues to Barranco Camp, descending 650 meters to 3,950 meters. The ascent to Lava Tower helps with acclimatization, as the body adjusts to the higher altitude.
The fifth day involves a short but challenging climb up the Barranco Wall, followed by a flatter trek to Karanga Camp. The 6-kilometer journey takes about 4-5 hours, with an elevation gain of 85 meters, bringing climbers to 4,035 meters. The camp offers fantastic views of the surrounding valleys and peaks.
On Day 6, climbers trek 4 kilometers in 3-4 hours, ascending to Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters. The terrain is alpine desert, and the camp offers dramatic views of the summit’s glaciers. This is the final stop before the summit push, and climbers rest and prepare for the demanding summit day..
Summit day begins around midnight, and climbers ascend through the night to reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. The total distance is 19 kilometers, and the journey takes approximately 12-16 hours. After reaching the summit and celebrating, climbers descend to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters for rest.
The final day of the trek involves a descent from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, covering 10 kilometers in 3-4 hours. As trekkers descend through rainforest, they will experience a shift in temperature and terrain. Upon reaching the gate, climbers receive their summit certificates and are transported back to their accommodation.
