Day 2: Begin the Climb

Today starts early with a drive from Moshi to Rongai Gate (1,950 m / 6,398 ft) on Kilimanjaro’s northern side. After registration and unpacking your gear, the trek officially begins. The trail winds through lush rainforest as you make your way to Simba Camp at 2,830 m (9,285 ft). This first day’s hike takes about four hours and is relatively gentle, offering beautiful scenery while helping you ease into the climb.

Day 3: Trek Through Moorland

Today, the trail climbs above the forest, opening up expansive and breathtaking views. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife such as elephants and giraffes roaming the plains below. After three to four hours of hiking, you arrive at Second Cave at 3,450 m (11,300 ft). The unique and vibrant moorland vegetation makes this section especially scenic, and many trekkers consider it one of the most memorable parts of the route.

Day 4: Ascend to Kikelelwa Cave

Today’s trek takes around three to four hours as you climb to Kikelelwa Cave at 3,600 m (11,811 ft). Along the way, you’ll pass more stunning moorland and enjoy panoramic views of both Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. You’re now deep into the heart of the climb, and the effects of higher altitude may start to be noticeable. Moving at a steady pace, however, helps your body acclimatize comfortably as you continue upward.

Day 5: Climb to Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Today’s hike takes roughly four hours as you ascend to Mawenzi Tarn Hut at 4,315 m (14,160 ft), gaining over 700 metres in elevation. You enter the stark and dramatic alpine desert zone, where vegetation is sparse but the scenery is striking. From the campsite, you’ll enjoy an incredible close-up view of the towering Mawenzi Peak, making this a truly memorable day on the trail.

Day 6: Trek to Kibo Hut

Today involves a longer hike of approximately five to six hours as you make your way to Kibo Hut at 4,750 m (15,600 ft). You’ll cross the relatively flat expanse known as “the Saddle,” which connects Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The trek continues through the stark alpine desert, with opportunities to spot eagles and other birds soaring overhead. As the altitude takes its toll, staying focused and maintaining a steady pace is key to reaching camp safely.

Day 7: Summit Day!

The big day begins around midnight as you set out for the summit. This challenging climb takes roughly eight hours, but your team will be with you every step of the way. Aim to reach Stella Point by sunrise, where the views are truly unforgettable. From there, it’s about an hour to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m (19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa! After celebrating at the top, you begin the descent, hiking approximately eight hours to Horombo Hut at 3,720 m (12,205 ft) for a well-earned rest.
