Tour Overview

The Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic paths up Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers trekkers a challenging yet rewarding journey, with stunning views of the mountain’s diverse ecosystems. This route is known for its steady ascent and diverse landscapes, starting in the rainforest and progressing through moorland, alpine desert, and finally, the summit zone. The Machame Route takes 7 days, which provides ample time for acclimatization, increasing the chances of reaching the summit. Despite its popularity, the route still offers trekkers an authentic Kilimanjaro experience, with its beautiful views and varied terrain. The route is physically demanding but not overly technical, making it accessible to those in good physical condition. It is considered one of the best options for climbers looking for a scenic and moderately challenging climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

ITINERARY

  • Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,000m)

The adventure begins at Machame Gate, where climbers are registered before starting the trek. The first day's hike takes about 5-6 hours, covering 11 kilometers. The trail winds through the dense rainforest, with an elevation gain of 1,200 meters to reach Machame Camp at 3,000 meters. The pace is moderate, allowing trekkers to enjoy the lush environment and spot wildlife along the way.

  • Day 2: Machame Camp (3,000m) to Shira Camp (3,850m)

Day 2 is a 5-6 hour trek covering 5 kilometers, with a 850-meter elevation gain. The terrain changes as trekkers leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone, where the landscape becomes more open and expansive. The trail gradually ascends, and trekkers reach Shira Camp at 3,850 meters, where they can enjoy views of the Shira Plateau.

  • Day 3: Shira Camp (3,850m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m)

The third day involves a 6-7 hour hike of about 10 kilometers, with a moderate elevation gain of 100 meters. Despite the steep terrain, the slower ascent helps climbers acclimatize.

  • Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Day 4 starts with the famous Barranco Wall, which requires some scrambling. The ascent lasts for 1-2 hours, after which the trek continues over a more moderate 6 kilometers in 4-5 hours, with an elevation gain of just 85 meters. After reaching Karanga Camp at 4,035 meters, trekkers can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys and peaks.

  • Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

The trek to Barafu Camp takes about 4-5 hours, covering 4 kilometers with a 600-meter elevation gain. The terrain becomes steeper as climbers ascend through alpine desert toward Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters. This day is critical for acclimatization, and climbers are encouraged to rest and prepare for the summit attempt.

  • Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Summit day begins in the early hours of the morning, around midnight. Climbers ascend for about 7-8 hours, covering 13 kilometers and gaining 1,255 meters to reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. After celebrating at the summit, trekkers descend for 6-7 hours to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters. The total distance for the day is 19 kilometers, and it’s a physically demanding trek

  • Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

The final descent takes about 3-4 hours and covers 10 kilometers. The path takes trekkers through the lush forest zone, with the temperature warming as they descend.
