7 Days Kilimanjaro- Umbwe route

7 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route

Tour Overview

The Umbwe Route is one of the most direct and challenging routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, favored by experienced trekkers seeking a rugged and less trafficked path. Starting from the southern side of the mountain, the route ascends steeply through dense rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts before reaching the summit. Unlike other routes, Umbwe has a rapid gain in altitude, which can be demanding and requires good physical preparation and proper acclimatization. The route provides a more solitary experience, with fewer trekkers, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and the towering glaciers. Despite the challenging ascent, the route is rewarding for its raw beauty and the sense of accomplishment when reaching the summit. The trek typically spans 7 days, allowing climbers to acclimatize and enjoy Kilimanjaro’s diverse environments, making it a tough but memorable adventure

ITINERARY

  • Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,800m) to Umbwe Camp (2,950m)

The trek begins at Umbwe Gate and ascends steeply through dense rainforest. Over the course of 5-6 hours and 11 kilometers, trekkers gain 1,150 meters in elevation to reach Umbwe Camp at 2,950 meters. This is a tough start, but the forest's beauty and wildlife make it enjoyable.

  • Day 2: Umbwe Camp (2,950m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m)

Today, the route climbs steeply through moorland, with a distance of 7 kilometers covered in 6-7 hours. Climbers gain 1,000 meters in elevation to reach Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters. The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers.

  • Day 3: Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

The third day involves a short but challenging climb up the Barranco Wall, followed by a flatter path to Karanga Camp. The 6-kilometer trek takes 4-5 hours, and climbers gain 85 meters in elevation. The camp provides excellent views of the surrounding valleys and peaks.

  • Day 4: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

On day four, the trek covers 4 kilometers in 3-4 hours, with a 600-meter gain in elevation. The steep ascent through alpine desert leads to Barafu Camp, where trekkers rest and prepare for the summit attempt. The barren landscape offers dramatic views of the mountain’s glaciers.

  • Day 5: Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Summit day begins early, with climbers reaching Uhuru Peak in 7-8 hours and covering 13 kilometers. After celebrating at the summit, trekkers descend for 6 hours to Mweka Camp, located at 3,100 meters. This day’s trek is long but rewarding, requiring stamina for both the ascent and descent.

  • Day 6: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

The final descent takes about 3-4 hours to cover the 10 kilometers back to Mweka Gate. As you descend through the forest, the temperature rises, and the landscape becomes lush. Reaching Mweka Gate signals the end of the trek, where climbers receive their summit certificates.

  • Day 7: Departure
