Tour Overview
The 6-Day Machame Route, commonly known as the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most popular and challenging routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Renowned for its breathtaking scenery and diverse landscapes, the route approaches the mountain from the south and offers climbers an exciting and rewarding trekking experience.
The route passes through lush rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Although shorter than the 7-day Machame itinerary, the 6-day route still follows the important "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization principle, making it a great choice for fit and experienced trekkers seeking a faster ascent.
Perfect for adventurous climbers looking for spectacular scenery and a challenging summit experience, the 6-Day Machame Route remains one of Kilimanjaro's most sought-after trekking routes.

6-Day Machame Route Itinerary
Day 0: Arrival in Tanzania
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. In the evening, meet your professional mountain guide for a comprehensive climb briefing, equipment inspection, and final preparations for your Kilimanjaro adventure. This is an excellent opportunity to ask questions, ensure all gear is ready, and get a good night's rest before the trek begins.
Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi
Day 1: Hotel – Machame Gate – Machame Camp
After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate for registration and permit formalities. Begin your trek through the lush rainforest, where giant trees, colorful birds, and colobus monkeys can often be seen.
The trail gradually ascends through dense forest before reaching Machame Camp, situated at the edge of the rainforest zone.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs steeply through heath and moorland vegetation. As the landscape opens up, enjoy magnificent views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru in the distance.
Arrive at Shira Camp, located on the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Today's trek is a crucial acclimatization day. Ascend gradually to Lava Tower (4,630m), a dramatic volcanic rock formation known as the "Shark's Tooth."
After spending time at higher altitude, descend to Barranco Camp. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy helps your body adjust to the altitude and improves your chances of summit success.
Barranco Camp is located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall and offers spectacular views of the southern glaciers.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, climb the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the Machame Route. Although steep in appearance, the ascent is non-technical and offers spectacular views.
Continue through Karanga Valley and across alpine desert terrain before reaching Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt.
Upon arrival, enjoy an early dinner and rest before the midnight ascent.
Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Around midnight, begin the final ascent to the summit. Trek slowly through the darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim, passing between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. This is the most demanding stage of the climb, both physically and mentally.
Upon reaching Stella Point, enjoy a short rest before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Witness a breathtaking sunrise and celebrate your incredible achievement at the Roof of Africa.
After taking photos and enjoying the moment, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
After breakfast, enjoy your final descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Upon arrival, receive your well-earned summit certificate and celebrate your achievement with your mountain crew.
Your driver will be waiting at Mweka Gate to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, where a hot shower and comfortable bed await.
