Tour Overview
The 6-Day Shira Route is one of the most scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering spectacular panoramic views, diverse landscapes, and a unique approach from the western side of the mountain. The route begins at a relatively high elevation on the Shira Plateau, allowing climbers to experience Kilimanjaro's dramatic alpine scenery from the very first day.
The Shira Route follows a similar path to the Lemosho Route after crossing the Shira Plateau and joins the Southern Circuit before summiting via Barafu Camp. Along the way, trekkers pass through heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone while enjoying breathtaking views of Kibo Peak, Mount Meru, and Kilimanjaro's glaciers.
Due to the higher starting elevation, the Shira Route is best suited for climbers with previous trekking experience and good physical fitness. The 6-day itinerary provides a rewarding challenge while maintaining a reasonable acclimatization profile.
Perfect for adventurous climbers seeking spectacular scenery, fewer crowds, and a memorable ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.

Begin a short trek across the plateau to Shira 1 Camp. Enjoy spectacular views of Kibo Peak, Mount Meru, and the surrounding high-altitude landscapes.
Day 2: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

The relatively short hiking day allows for acclimatization and provides opportunities for optional afternoon acclimatization walks around camp.
Overnight at Shira 2 Camp.
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Today's trek is a crucial acclimatization day. Ascend gradually toward Lava Tower (4,630m), a dramatic volcanic rock formation known as the "Shark's Tooth."
After spending time at high altitude, descend to Barranco Camp. This important "climb high, sleep low" strategy helps improve acclimatization and increases summit success rates.
Barranco Camp offers spectacular views beneath the famous Barranco Wall.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, climb the famous Barranco Wall, one of Kilimanjaro's most exciting highlights. Although steep in appearance, the climb is non-technical and rewards trekkers with incredible panoramic views.
Continue through alpine terrain before arriving at Karanga Camp.
Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Ascend through barren alpine desert landscapes toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt.
Upon arrival, enjoy lunch, rest, and prepare for the midnight summit ascent. After an early dinner, sleep for a few hours before beginning the climb to the summit.
Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Gate – Moshi
Around midnight, begin the final ascent toward Stella Point on the crater rim. Continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
Celebrate your incredible achievement while witnessing a breathtaking sunrise over the glaciers and surrounding landscapes.
After spending time at the summit, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing all the way down through Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. Upon arrival, receive your summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi.
Note: Some operators prefer a 7-day version of the Shira Route with an overnight stay at Mweka Camp after the summit. This is generally recommended for greater comfort and recovery.
